Benny Andersen
Born in Vangede, on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Benny Andersen (1929–2018) developed a distinctive career at the intersection of poetry, song and piano, deeply rooted in the Danish language. Before publishing, he worked as a pianist—particularly in Denmark, Norway and Sweden—which informed a restrained, musical writing style close to the Scandinavian “vise,” between popular song, spoken narrative and piano melody. After the collection Den musikalske ål in 1960, his work as a composer and lyricist became a lasting presence, marked by a keen eye for daily detail, gentle irony and wordplay. Andersen’s name remains closely associated with his collaboration with singer Povl Dissing, begun in the 1970s and continued on stage for decades across Denmark. Together they produced, among others, Svantes viser (1972), Oven visse vande (1981), Hymner og ukrudt (1984) and Over adskillige grænser (1988). In Andersen’s hands the song moves forward without emphasis, with concise writing, ordinary characters and a constant attention to the rhythm of speech.
