Esben Just

Danish pianist and singer Esben Just has for several years been building a musical world centered on rhythm and blues and New Orleans piano, blended with elements of jazz, blues and gospel. Rooted in Denmark’s live scene, Esben Just bases most of his career on concerts — either solo at the piano with vocals or accompanied by various groups — where improvisation and direct interaction with the audience are central. Much of his output comes from the trio SP Just Frost, where he hones an energetic, syncopated style nourished by boogie‑woogie and soul‑jazz traditions, while leaving room for original compositions. Between renditions of New Orleans standards and original pieces, he alternates sung narratives and extended instrumental passages, ranging from intimate ballads to more celebratory numbers. His work constantly moves between American heritage and Scandinavian culture, in his repertoire choices, his vocal approach and the way he adapts this pianistic language to diverse settings, from small clubs to major festival stages.
