Bong-Ra
Active since the late 1990s, Dutch producer Bong‑Ra, the alias of Jason Köhnen, is part of the extreme electronic scene from Utrecht in the Netherlands. Initially associated with breakcore and a very fast form of drum'n'bass, Bong‑Ra blends fractured rhythms, jungle and gabber heritage, metal references and dub influences, with a taste for cinematic samples and dark atmospheres. Early albums such as New Millennium Dreadz (2001) and the soundtrack Bikini Bandits, Kill! Kill! Kill! (2003) established the foundations of an aggressive, dense sound, continued by Full Metal Racket (2006) on Planet Mu and Grist (2008), which secured his place within specialized label networks. Alongside his work in groups like The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation, Bong‑Ra developed a hybrid live format—half electronic live set, half the energy of extreme music—regularly presented at clubs and festivals devoted to radical sounds. From Monolith (2012) and more noticeably with Antediluvian (2021), he has gradually shifted his aesthetic toward slower tempos, closer to doom and experimental metal, while retaining breakcore‑derived rhythmic writing and a pronounced attention to low‑end textures and occult atmospheres.
