Daniel Bell
Born in Sacramento in 1967, raised in Toronto and settled in Detroit at the end of his adolescence, Daniel Bell developed his craft within the North American techno and house scenes of the early 1990s. After a stint in Cybersonic with Richie Hawtin, he moved away from the harder sound then associated with Plus 8 and, under the name DBX, developed a more stripped‑down approach characterized by supple grooves, repeated motifs and dry electronic textures—often associated with minimal techno and bleep. Bell launched the Accelerate label, then co‑founded 7th City with Claude Young, extending a more restrained, funk‑influenced side of Detroit techno. His track “Losing Control”, released in 1994 on Peacefrog, remains one of the period’s landmarks. In subsequent years Bell continued his work across production, labels and DJ sets, notably releasing Globus Mix Vol. 4 - The Button Down Mind Of Daniel Bell in 2000, The Button‑Down Mind Strikes Back! in 2003 and the compilation Blip, Blurp, Bleep: The Music of Daniel Bell the same year, before continuing his career from Berlin.
