Cypress Hill

Hailing from the South Gate neighborhood of Los Angeles, Cypress Hill emerged in the early 1990s as a hip‑hop group rooted in Latino heritage and a taste for dark atmospheres. The trio brought together rapper B‑Real, known for his high, nasal tone; Sen Dog, with a deeper, more chanted delivery; and producer DJ Muggs—soon joined on stage by percussionist Eric Bobo—giving Cypress Hill a clearly defined collective identity. Their self‑titled debut (1991), followed by Black Sunday (1993) and Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom (1995), established a sound built on psychedelic samples, heavy bass, and slow tempos, blending street narratives, dark humor, cannabis references, and snippets of Spanish. From the late 1990s—especially with IV (1998) and Skull & Bones (2000)—Cypress Hill expanded its rap with rock and metal influences, appearing as often on hip‑hop stages as at amplified music festivals and increasing collaborations within the Soul Assassins collective. Their discography continued with Stoned Raiders (2001), Till Death Do Us Part (2004), Rise Up (2010), Elephants on Acid (2018), and Back in Black (2022), confirming Cypress Hill’s longevity across decades between the West Coast, Chicano culture, and psychedelic rap.
