The Surfrajettes

Formed in Toronto in 2015, The Surfrajettes play instrumental surf rock rooted in a 1960s aesthetic, featuring twin-guitar interplay, clear melodic lines and an approach that blends twang surf, instrumental rock and touches of rockabilly. The band's core has consisted of Shermy Freeman and Nicole Damoff since the beginning—Damoff coming from a blues background—while the rhythm section has evolved over the years; The Surfrajettes now operate as a quartet with Annie Lillis on drums and Abby Jo Powell on bass. After a self-titled EP in 2017, they attracted attention in 2018 with an instrumental cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic," which circulated well beyond the surf scene. Their debut album Roller Fink was released in 2022 on Hi-Tide Recordings, followed by Easy as Pie in 2024. Between original compositions and pop reworkings transformed into surf tracks, The Surfrajettes form part of a revival of the repertoire while maintaining a direct, light and highly rhythmic songwriting style.
