Atrophy

Formed in Tucson, Arizona, Atrophy emerged in the late 1980s in the wake of the American thrash metal scene, with a fast, dry and upfront sound, marked by nervy riffs, taut rhythm and abrasive vocals. First active under the name Heresy, the band adopted its final name before releasing two demos in 1987, then signed to Roadrunner. Atrophy then recorded Socialized Hate in 1988 and Violent by Nature in 1990, two albums that placed it in the thrash wave of the era, between hardcore aggression, metal precision and lyrics rooted in social and political tensions. During this initial period, Atrophy toured the United States and Europe and shared the bill with several outfits from the extreme metal and thrash scene. After lineup changes and the band's split in the early 1990s, Atrophy re-formed in 2015 around vocalist Brian Zimmerman, the only historic member still present in the current lineup. A new phase then opened with several lineup rearrangements, ahead of the 2024 release of Asylum, the band's third studio album. Atrophy today continues its activity with a lineup centered around Brian Zimmerman, in a thrash-forward continuity faithful to its roots but placed in a contemporary context.
