Fred Eaglesmith

Born in 1957 into a farming family near Caistor Centre, Ontario, Canadian songwriter Fred Eaglesmith developed early on a world shaped by rural landscapes, machine shops, and the small towns of North America. Active since the late 1970s, Eaglesmith stands in the alternative country and Americana vein, blending folk, roots rock, and occasional bluegrass inflections, with a steady focus on storytelling and ordinary characters. His songs, often narrative and dialogic, take up back roads, trains, faith, economic setbacks, and frayed relationships, in a register where irony sits alongside a form of social realism. Over the decades, he has built a substantial discography on independent labels and through self‑releases, alongside intensive touring in Canada, the United States, and Europe, in clubs as well as on the stages of folk and country festivals. Backed at different times by various groups — such as The Flying Squirrels or more acoustic lineups — he also developed a traveling show format, The Fred Eaglesmith Travelling Steam Show, where concert, stories, and humor intertwine, often appearing on stage as a duo with Texas musician Tif Ginn. Several artists from the North American country scene have covered Eaglesmith’s compositions, quietly extending the reach of his repertoire beyond the independent circuit.
