Chocolate Remix
From Tucumán in northern Argentina, Romina Bernardo performs as Chocolate Remix with a solo project positioned between reggaeton, perreo and latin club rap. As an MC and producer, Chocolate Remix writes direct lyrics that address sexuality, gender and social, political and cultural issues from a queer, anti-fascist and transfeminist perspective, mixing satire, humour and a forthright voice. Her music adopts reggaeton’s codes and relocates them to a more hybrid register where dembow, baile funk, guaracha, RKT and house intersect, in an aesthetic designed for both the club and attentive listening. Emerging in the second half of the 2010s, the Chocolate Remix project has been shaped through singles, collaborations and three studio albums. In 2017 the BBC included Romina Bernardo on its 100 Women list. Since then Chocolate Remix has continued work that is at once danceable and discursive, at the intersection of Latin rap, club musics and explicitly political writing.
