Chris Potter
Born in Chicago in 1971, American saxophonist and composer Chris Potter emerged on the New York jazz scene in the 1990s alongside trumpeter Red Rodney, after a childhood spent in South Carolina. Rooted in contemporary jazz and post-bop, Potter has developed a dense, melodic approach characterized by a keen sense of harmony and rhythm, which he primarily expresses on the tenor saxophone but also on other reed instruments. From "Concentric Circles" (1994) and then "Vertigo" (1998), his albums as a leader reveal a compositional style that alternates between structured themes, extended improvisations and more open textures. He has since led a range of ensembles, from an acoustic quartet to the more electrified group Underground, and later undertook larger-scale projects such as "Imaginary Cities" (2015) and "The Dreamer Is The Dream" (2017). Alongside his own groups, Potter remains in demand as a sideman with musicians like Dave Holland, Paul Motian and Pat Metheny, situating his work within a network of New York clubs, international tours and collaborations at the crossroads of jazz, fusion and more popular aesthetics.
