Artful Dodger

Originating in Southampton, Artful Dodger first emerged in the late 1990s as the duo Mark Hill and Pete Devereux, born out of remix and bootleg work before moving on to original productions. Artful Dodger sits within UK garage, more precisely a 2-step strand that mixes broken rhythms, a house heritage and choruses marked by R&B. This aesthetic took shape across a series of singles featuring voices such as Craig David, Romina Johnson, Robbie Craig, Lifford and Melanie Blatt, with tracks like 'Re-Rewind', 'Movin' Too Fast', 'Woman Trouble' and 'Please Don't Turn Me On'. In 2000 Artful Dodger released the album It's All About the Stragglers, which gathers the core of that period and documents the shift from the underground circuit to wider exposure. After Hill and Devereux split in 2001, the story of the name became more complex: Artful Dodger continued in another form, carried on stage by MC Alistair and DJ Dave Low, in a DJ-and-MC format that extended the connection to the British garage scene. This trajectory makes Artful Dodger a name associated both with the rise of UK garage in the late 1990s and with its persistence in clubs and festivals in the following decades.
