DJ Travella

Drawing on neighborhood scenes in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, DJ Travella shapes a highly personal vision of singeli, the local electronic current marked by extreme tempos and relentless dance energy. The producer and DJ, born Hamadi Hassani, has developed since the late 2010s a style that pushes the genre toward more abstract digital textures—fast melodic loops, staccato percussion and build-ups that verge on rave aesthetics. DJ Travella often structures his sets as semi-improvised performances, mixing live production, track selection and performative interventions in an approach that blurs the line between live show and DJing. His album "Mr Mixondo," released in 2022 on the Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes, has helped circulate his music beyond the Tanzanian scene, while tracks like "Crazy Beat Music Umeme 2" have found their way into clubs and international festivals. Present on European bills such as Nuits sonores and Peacock Society, DJ Travella continues to root his singeli in the reality of Dar es Salaam’s street parties while engaging with the networks of experimental electronic music.
