Matteo

Co-founder of Chinese Man, a collective born in Provence and developed around Chinese Man Records, Matteo has built since the 2000s a career at the crossroads of DJ sets, production and composition. He operates in a register where hip-hop meets afro-club, baile funk, shatta, gqom, bouyon and bass music, with DJ selections and productions that combine club rhythms, electronic textures and a culture of sampling. As a solo artist Matteo released the album Scaglia in 2018 and has since pursued work more open to crossovers between scenes and formats, notably inviting KT Gorique, AYLO and Illaman to his projects. In 2022 Matteo & Bro marked a new stage with a project assembled with four jazz musicians, conceived as a dialogue between electronic writing and collective playing. Matteo also composes for film and live performance, including Vincent Cappello’s films Nouveau Monde and Dernier appel, and Le livre Muet by Lamine Diagne, presented at the Théâtre national de La Criée in Marseille. Since 2023 Matteo has also developed Applause, a series of nights in which he explores shatta, baile funk, grime, breakbeat, 2-step garage and hip-hop with an approach open to exchanges between scenes and aesthetics.
