John Primer

Formed in the juke joints of Mississippi before moving to Chicago in the early 1960s, John Primer belongs to the lineage of electric Chicago blues. Born in 1945 in Camden, Mississippi, he first absorbed rural blues and later made his mark in South Side clubs, notably as guitarist and bandleader at Theresa’s Lounge, where he accompanied many local musicians. In the late 1970s he joined Willie Dixon’s Chicago Blues All-Stars, then became one of the regular guitarists in Muddy Waters’ band in the early 1980s, before spending nearly a decade with Magic Slim & The Teardrops. From the 1990s onward John Primer developed a career under his own name, touring internationally and recording in the studio, with albums such as Stuff You Got to Watch (1992), The Real Deal (1996) and Knockin’ Around These Blues (2013, a duo with harmonica player Bob Corritore). His playing blends urban riffs, Delta heritage and frequent use of slide, while his singing emphasizes a repertoire centered on traditional Chicago blues, performed both with a full electric lineup and in smaller formats.
