American Aquarium
Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, around singer-songwriter BJ Barham, American Aquarium has since the mid-2000s developed a country-rock with Americana-inflected tones, driven by electric guitar, pedal steel, and writing focused on ordinary lives, the American South, and intimate fault lines. The band formed in 2005–2006 and first made its mark on the road, with a steady touring schedule that accompanied the early albums Antique Hearts (2006), The Bible and the Bottle (2008), Dances for the Lonely (2009) and Small Town Hymns (2010). American Aquarium later broadened its reach with Burn. Flicker. Die. (2012), produced by Jason Isbell, before continuing with Wolves (2015), Things Change (2018) and Lamentations (2020), recorded with Shooter Jennings. The lineup has undergone many changes over the years, but BJ Barham remains at the center, surrounded by a band that makes Southern rock, alternative country and roots songwriting dialogue in a format that is at once direct and melodic. With Chicamacomico (2022) and The Fear of Standing Still (2024), American Aquarium has evolved its sound between Americana ballads, contemporary country and tighter tracks, while remaining tied to the circuits of venues, roots festivals and American Americana scenes.
