Hey Colossus

Active since 2003 and formed in London around Joe Thompson and Robert Davis, Hey Colossus has built itself in the wake of the British DIY scenes with a sound initially rooted in sludge metal and noise rock, before gradually broadening its terrain toward post-punk, psychedelic rock, drone and more open forms of experimental rock. The band, whose lineup has often evolved, released its first album, Hey Colossus Hates You, in 2004, followed by a substantial discography including Happy Birthday in 2008, RRR in 2011, Cuckoo Live Life Like Cuckoo in 2013, In Black and Gold and Radio Static High in 2015, The Guillotine in 2017, Four Bibles in 2019, Dances/Curses in 2020 and In Blood in 2023. Across these records, Hey Colossus shifted its writing from a frontal, massive register toward more melodic, repetitive or abrasive tracks depending on the period, without breaking with a dense and taut aesthetic. Mark Lanegan's collaboration on The Mirror, released on Dances/Curses, also marks Hey Colossus' ability to make heaviness, spoken word and hallucinatory atmospheres converse.
