Ashkabad

Emerging from the French dub scene, Ashkabad develops a project focused on electronic dub at the crossroads of steppers, digital reggae, and bass music. Active since the 2010s, Ashkabad is part of the network of netlabels and independent outfits that helped spread dub in France and across Europe, with a steady flow of digital releases, 12-inch singles, and remixes. The project’s work is defined by massive basslines, choppy, sound system–oriented rhythms, a pronounced use of cinematic atmospheres, and melodic motifs drawn from world music, all assembled into often progressive structures. On stage, Ashkabad adapts this sound to a format built for powerful sound systems, playing with tempo shifts, versions, and tension-building build-ups characteristic of contemporary dub culture. Over the years, Ashkabad has connected with various European scenes, multiplying collaborations with singers and producers from reggae and bass music while maintaining a clear identity centered on dense, instrumental electronic dub.
