Info
On 3 June 2027 at 229 London, Toots and the Maytals return with a new chapter led by Leba Hibbert, keeping the band’s gospel-and-soul-driven reggae spirit alive onstage. Born out of Kingston’s early 60s vocal-trio scene, the Maytals helped shape the jump from ska to rocksteady and straight into reggae, with tight harmonies and that gritty, elastic vocal style that made their sound instantly recognisable.
This show is built around the catalogue that turned them into a cornerstone of Jamaican music: “Do the Reggay”, the 1968 track that pushed the word “reggae” into wider circulation, and crowd-ready classics like “54-46 Was My Number”, “Pressure Drop”, “Monkey Man”, “Funky Kingston”, “Bam Bam” and “Time Tough”. With Leba at the front, the set leans into the originals without turning them into museum pieces, tapping into the band’s long tradition of touring and reinvention while keeping the groove direct, raw, and made for a room like this.
