On May 23, 2027, Steel Pulse arrives at La Laiterie in Strasbourg with what has defined its sound since the late 1970s: a taut roots reggae, propelled by the bass, the off-beats, and vocal harmonies inherited from the Jamaican tradition. Formed in 1975 in the Handsworth district of Birmingham, the group has established itself as a major voice of British reggae, at the crossroads of the reggae and punk scenes that animated England during Rock Against Racism.
On stage, the dynamic remains the same: grooves that move forward with purpose, choruses designed to be sung in unison, and lyrics that confront racism, social inequalities, and the realities of the Black diaspora. Around the central figure of David “Dread” Hinds and Selwyn Brown, Steel Pulse navigates between the urgency of its early days and expanded arrangements explored across its albums, from Handsworth Revolution to Babylon the Bandit, without losing the thread of its commitment.
