On June 23, 2027, Stef Bos will perform at the Toon Hermans Theater in Sittard. Bos, born in Veenendaal (1961), has for decades moved between the Netherlands, Belgium and South Africa, with a body of work built on songs in which the story always comes first. After studying at Studio Herman Teirlinck in Antwerp, he initially wrote for others, but from his debut Is dit nu later (1990) his own voice became recognizable: sober, text-driven and intimate. Songs such as Papa brought him to a broad audience in the Netherlands and Flanders, without ever relinquishing his roots in kleinkunst and chanson. In his later work you hear how South Africa has become part of the music: different rhythms, different colors, sometimes Afrikaans alongside Dutch, and collaborations with local musicians. Live, Bos moves deftly between intimate songs and pieces that are given a fuller arrangement, with spoken passages in between that open the themes: family, memory, identity and spirituality, presented straightforwardly. An evening for those who enjoy listening to words that linger, without frills.
