Le Rack'am presents: Zenzile Sound System.
Doing the same thing differently is what defines Zenzile's approach since its creation. This, at least, is what the Angers-based group has accustomed us to since 1996, through around twenty records, all distinctive, and now classics of dub.
And since we're talking about classics, let's return to the precepts of the genre's historic masters: recreate, reinvent, recycle, experiment. The musicians of Zenzile have therefore decided to re-explore their own best riddims, their most familiar riffs, within their sound system.
The principle is simple: you start from an element already existing in a track that is immediately identifiable (an abyssal bass line, a manipulated percussion flourish, a keyboard or sax hook hovering in the air…) and everyone sets about improvising something new on it, all dubbed and redubbed live, giving rise to something both familiar and entirely novel, sometimes moving in directions very far from the original track, while keeping you on the ride to trance thanks to the initial gimmick.
And if you look discretely over your shoulder in the crowd, you might catch the ghosts of King Tubby, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Sly & Robbie, or Augustus Pablo dancing with fists raised to the sky.
