Pixies bring P40, their 40‑year celebration, to York Barbican in York on 20 May 2026. Formed in Boston in 1986 by Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering, the band carved a quiet‑loud grammar, sharp riffs and surreal imagery that ran through Surfer Rosa and Doolittle. That approach still anchors the live show, carried today by the core of Black Francis, Santiago and Lovering, with a catalogue that moves between abrupt turns and clear, direct melodies.
On stage, the set roams across eras: jagged guitars, skeletal drums, sudden dropouts and feedback swells, vocals that shift from hushed to raw in a breath. Staples such as Where Is My Mind?, Debaser and Monkey Gone to Heaven often sit alongside deeper cuts and newer material from the post‑reunion years. Expect a concert built on tension and release, collage and contrast, played lean and without ornament, true to the band’s way of writing and hearing independent rock.
