On 3 December 2026, SYML will perform together with the Metropole Orkest at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. Under the name SYML, American songwriter Brian Fennell creates spare indie pop in which piano, voice and subtle electronics form the starting point. His songs touch on adoption, family ties and grief; syml means “simple” in Welsh, and you hear that in the way melody and lyrics remain central. After The Day My Father Died (2023) and Nobody Lives Here (2025), this material is given a new frame on stage: orchestral colors that breathe, broad dynamics without frills, and ample space for silence and detail.
The Metropole Orkest, active since 1945 at the crossroads of jazz and pop, adds color and rhythm without losing the core of the songs. With a rhythm section rooted in big-band tradition and a substantial string section, the orchestra shifts between intimate and full, building arrangements that support SYML’s voice and piano. Expect reworkings that highlight familiar motifs, bring new lines to the fore and let the songs open up in the hall, while the intimate character remains intact.
