Bodega’s previous albums — “Endless Scroll,” “Broken Equipment” and “Our Brand Could Be Your Life” — have often drawn comparisons to emblematic bands from the 1970s–80s New York punk and post-punk scene that emerged from CBGB, where groups like Talking Heads and Television got their start. That musical current is characterized by raw, experimental energy, sitting between rock, punk and art rock. But Bodega is now distancing itself from that label. According to Hozie, the post-punk scene has become very saturated, with many bands reiterating the same codes. For “Pick Up The Check,” they instead drew on late-1980s and early-1990s alternative rock—notably bands like The Stone Roses and Jane’s Addiction—featuring more guitar riffs and solos. The aim was to create something wider, warmer and almost dreamy, inspired by an idealized vision of the alternative rock of their youth.
