Info
On 1 October 2027, Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts hosts Fisherman’s Friends, the Port Isaac crew keeping Cornwall’s sea shanty tradition alive on stage. Formed in the mid-90s out of harbour life, their set leans on close-harmony vocals, call-and-response choruses and sturdy rhythms drawn from maritime work songs. Mostly a cappella, the sound now folds in fiddle, guitar and squeezebox touches that lift the voices without crowding them.
Live, they move from salt-air ballads to deck-stomping chants, threading humour and local lore through tunes the room can pick up in a verse or two. Songs trace rescues, homecomings and rough weather, with choruses built for shared singing. Years on British folk stages and a run of records have shaped a show that favours story, blend and timing, keeping the cadence of traditional song present and clear.
