Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals will play TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht on 8 July 2026. Led by singer/guitarist Ben Harper, with his distinctive slide guitar, the outfit has grown since the mid-1990s from a backing band into a close-knit group with its own sound. That sound blends rock and folk with blues, soul, funk and reggae; tight rhythms and percussion carry the songs, while backing vocals add a touch of gospel.
Live, it’s all about the collective. Songs are given space, arrangements breathe, and there is room for improvisation without losing the song. The repertoire touches on different phases of Harper’s career, including material from Call It What It Is and newer work. On stage, guitar lines lock into the bass and drums, percussion drives onward and the voices weave together. An evening focused on interplay, groove and the tension arc of a band that knows its material inside out.
