Info
Rufus Wainwright and the Metropole Orkest join forces in Wainwright Does Weill. The Canadian‑American singer‑songwriter, who broke through in the late 1990s and has since been known for orchestral pop and meticulous songwriting, dives into the universe of Kurt Weill: songs with frayed edges, irony and melancholy, from Berlin cabaret to Weill’s American period. Wainwright’s flexible voice and sense of theatre fit this repertoire seamlessly, honed by years on stage, forays into opera and projects in which he stretches the boundary between pop and classical.
The Metropole Orkest, a Dutch orchestra at the crossroads of jazz, pop and film music, colours Weill’s world for the present. With a string sound that can breathe widely and a rhythm section that measures its touch precisely, the ensemble creates space around Wainwright’s phrasing while keeping the text’s edge intact. Expect no museum piece, but living music in which arrangement and storytelling strengthen one another.
To be heard on 9 January 2027 at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht.
