Cœur sauvage - SONIA GOMES

The exhibition Cœur sauvage by Sonia Gomes at the Palais de Tokyo invites a journey through the artist’s universe, where the threads of the intimate, the collective, and the sacred are woven. From fabrics found or donated, but also ropes, embroidery, fragments of wood or salvaged objects, Sonia Gomes composes sculptures, paintings and installations that unfold in space narratives of transmission and transformation. Knotted, twisted, assembled or embroidered, the materials bear traces of past lives and become vectors of a sensitive memory. Suspended, hung on the wall or placed on the floor, the works appear as living organisms whose forms seem to unfold and metamorphose in response to encounters between materials, textures and colors. Each assemblage gives body to shared stories and reveals the invisible links that bind beings across time. By reviving practices and know-how drawn from Afro-descendant traditions, Sonia Gomes endows her work with a dimension of symbolic repair. At the intersection of the personal and the political, her work interrogates the legacies of colonization, the relations of race and gender, as well as the mechanisms of cultural transmission. The color red, recurring in her visual vocabulary, runs through the exhibition as a through-line, turning matter into a language and making each work a space where resistance and reinvention meet.
