Born in São Tomé and Príncipe, brothers António and Fradique Mendes Ferreira founded Calema as a project spanning Lusophone Africa, Portugal and France. Their playground: Portuguese-language Afro-pop that drifts toward kizomba, R&B and occasional electronic touches, with a real sense of melody and choruses that linger. The duo’s name, inspired by the Atlantic waves, suits their music well: it moves, it travels, and it blends influences without forcing them. Since the early 2010s, Calema has released tracks that circulated across the Lusophone world, eventually establishing themselves on the Portuguese pop scene. Among the flagship tracks, “Te Amo” has far surpassed the status of an online hit. In 2024, they marked their 15-year career with the album Voyage, where pop, Afro and Latin flavors intersect, augmented by a major tour. Calema will perform in concert on 23 April 2027 at the Arkea Arena in Floirac.
