Laugh ’Til You Cry is Mathieu Madénian’s fourth show, in which he self-deprecatingly recounts how his life and certainties were upended by the late arrival of his first child. Over a fast-paced hour, he explores the tumultuous world of a newly minted father who tries to juggle the absurdities of the world while learning the ropes of parenthood.
How do you reconcile a traditional upbringing with the new wave of modern fatherhood? How do you explain concepts of gender to your son when you don’t even have TikTok figured out? And how do you avoid coming off as an out-of-touch boomer? With his trademark self-mockery, Mathieu Madénian talks about his mistakes, his missteps and the lessons he draws from his little boy, who, barely born, already seems to know more about life than he does.
