Roots & Culture 5 - The Abyssinians et Big Youth

Info

On May 7, 2026 at Elmediator, L’Archipel Perpignan, The Abyssinians and Big Youth share the bill for a roots-and-culture evening.

The Abyssinians, a vocal trio formed in Kingston, gave shape to a spiritual reggae carried by tight harmonies and ensemble singing that accompanied the transition from rocksteady to roots. Their track 'Satta Massagana' sealed their imprint, between deep basslines, gospel inflections and Rastafarian imagery. On stage, the group unfolds a repertoire in which choral work and the density of the voices emphasize the meditative and collective dimension of their songs.

Opposite them, Big Youth, a key figure of 1970s toasting, blends spoken phrasing, singing and Rasta slogans over roots riddims. Best known for 'Screaming Target', he forged his reputation on Kingston’s sound systems, with a sharp delivery and a knack for improvised commentary. In concert, his voice weaves through the group's pulses, alternating conscious messages, on-the-spot jibes and surges of energy.

Roots classics, Rasta consciousness and sound-system energy: two pillars of reggae reunited on the same night in Perpignan.
