Tower Of Power

Tower of Power will play on 24 May 2026 at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. The band from Oakland, formed in the late 1960s around saxophonist Emilio Castillo, developed its own signature: a tight horn section up front, a precise rhythm section beneath, and songs that move between funk, soul and rhythm-and-blues, with a touch of jazz. In the early years the group set its course with East Bay Grease (1970), Bump City (1972), Tower of Power (1973) and Back to Oakland (1974). Over the years the voices changed, but the core remained: compact arrangements, rolling syncopation and backing vocals that sharpen the hooks.

On stage it’s all about interplay and timing. The horns cut cleanly through the mix, bass and drums provide a springy foundation, and the vocals glide between ballads and uptempo numbers. Classics are given new life alongside more recent material such as Soul Side of Town (2018) and Step Up (2020), so the set draws a clear line from the East Bay roots to the present. An evening in Eindhoven where the characteristic horn-driven sound takes center stage—unadorned, with a focus on groove and arrangement.
