Amaro Freitas trio

Info

On April 14, 2026, at La Dynamo de Banlieues Bleues in Pantin, the evening opens with a France–Brazil dialogue. Guillaume Latil and Matheus Donato form an unusual string duo: cello for breadth and song, cavaquinho for attack and pulse. Their face‑to‑face moves from arpeggiated figures to taut, nervous rhythms, alternating countermelodies and unisons, and playing with space and resonance. Between tightly focused improvisations and clear melodies, this Franco‑Brazilian pair weaves a shared terrain where the cello’s woody timbre answers the cavaquinho’s bright metallic sheen.

Next comes the trio of Amaro Freitas, a pianist from Recife who bridges contemporary jazz and the traditions of Brazil’s Northeast. With Sidiel Vieira on double bass and Rodrigo “Digão” Braz on drums, he explores shifting meters, precise rhythmic writing, and finely carved themes. The piano leads while the rhythm section mirrors and responds, moving through fragmented grooves, sustained silences, and collective climaxes. An acoustic trio attentive to the moment and to nuance, rooted in Afro‑Brazilian cadences and fueled by improvisation.
