From Johannesburg to international runways, African fashion has, for the past twenty years, established itself as a vibrant, inventive and indispensable scene.
Having conquered New York, Chicago, Melbourne and Montreal, the exhibition Africa Fashion, conceived by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, arrives in Paris and sets up a dialogue between contemporary African fashion and the rich historical collections of the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac.
Through a captivating, colour-filled itinerary, the exhibition celebrates the rapid rise of the African scene, driven by a new generation of daring designers. Balancing traditional craftsmanship with stylistic innovation, their creations tell the story of a plural, connected Africa — proud of its roots and oriented toward the future.
Africa Fashion reveals intersecting influences, personal narratives and the commitments of artists who are redefining the rules of fashion. Lagos, Dakar and Johannesburg now stand alongside Paris and Milan on the international circuit. The exhibition offers an unprecedented immersion in this aesthetic and cultural revolution, unveiling a boundless creativity long sidelined by dominant narratives.
For the occasion, the museum highlights its rich, rarely exhibited collection of African textiles, accessories and jewellery, along with a selection of photographs drawn from its archives and gathered from the public, creating a dialogue between past and present.
