On March 12, 2027, at La Clef in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Sona Jobarteh will unfold her universe around the kora, this 21-string West African harp that she has helped to bring beyond its boundaries, establishing herself as one of the first women to make it a stage instrument at the highest level. Heir to a lineage of Mandinka griots, trained between The Gambia and the United Kingdom, she draws on tradition while pushing it forward with a writing that is open to acoustic folk, Afro-pop, sometimes touches of jazz, and a voice that carries just as well in Mandinka as in English.
On stage, her pieces move forward in hypnotic motifs of kora, choirs and discreet string arrangements, with that sense of a flexible groove and clear singing that lets emotion circulate without overdoing it. Between renditions from her repertoire and newer titles, the concert promises a moment that is both intimate and alive, where transmission and commitment remain at the heart of the sound.
