On May 14, 2026, at the Rockstore in Montpellier, The Abyssinians and Big Youth share the bill for a plunge into Jamaican roots reggae. The Abyssinians, a vocal trio formed in the late 1960s, established their signature with tight harmonies and spiritual lyrics nourished by the Rastafari movement. Their song “Satta Massagana,” partly sung in Amharic, stands as an anthem that has been taken up through the decades. Albums like Forward on to Zion marked the 1970s and laid the foundations for a reggae that is both meditative and conscious, and which continues to infuse today’s scene.
Big Youth, born Manley Augustus Buchanan, asserted himself in the 1970s as one of the genre’s key deejays. His half-sung toasting, rooted in Jamaican everyday life and the pursuit of social justice, brought him recognition with tracks such as “S-90 Skank” and the album Screaming Target, which became a landmark. Although his standing fluctuated in the late 1970s, he remains a respected voice, active over several decades, whose influence crosses reggae and dub. On stage, the meeting unites Rasta harmonies and an incisive flow—two sides of the same story.
