Info

On May 5, 2026 at Le Dodu (Marseille), The Abyssinians and Big Youth bring together two strands of reggae on the same stage.

The Abyssinians, a vocal trio formed in the late 1960s, perform roots reggae built on tight harmonies and lyrics inspired by the Rastafari movement. Their Satta Massagana, partly sung in Amharic, became a widely covered standard and helped establish a sound that is both meditative and grounded in real-life concerns. Albums like Forward on to Zion consolidated this signature: choral voices, deep basslines, biblical imagery, and a way of combining spirituality with social commentary. Live, the group emphasizes vocal cohesion and the steady tempo of the riddims, returning to the foundations of roots reggae.

Big Youth, Manley Augustus Buchanan, emerged in the early 1970s as one of the key deejays of Jamaican toasting. His half-spoken, half-sung delivery, Rasta slogans and perspectives on daily life in Kingston made a mark on the sound systems. S-90 Skank firmly established him, and Screaming Target is a landmark in his discography, alongside tracks like Chi Chi Run. Between roots, early dancehall and touches of soul, Big Youth delivers an incisive flow, improvises across riddims and connects the raw energy of the sound system to the stage.
