On Friday 24 July 2026, Future Yard in Birkenhead hosts the return of bassist Shez Raja with guitarist Guthrie Govan. Raja leads with a melodic, rhythmic approach to the bass, folding Indo-jazz colors into funk and deep groove. His projects lean into cross-cultural rhythms and nimble improvisation, shaped by collaborations with Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Wayne Krantz and Trilok Gurtu. He arrives touring Spellbound, his new album recorded with drummer Dennis Chambers, a set of tunes built for onstage interplay.
Guthrie Govan joins on guitar, bringing articulate phrasing and harmonic curiosity honed across studio and stage, including work with Hans Zimmer. Recognized by Guitarist magazine’s Guitarist of the Year and often featured in Guitar Player and Guitar World, he moves easily from lyrical lines to agile, angular runs, locking into Raja’s grooves with precision.
They are completed by long-time allies Chris Jerome on keyboards (noted for his work with Courtney Pine) and drummer Sophie Alloway. The quartet maps a live terrain where jazz fusion meets tight funk and open-ended improvisation, with space for detailed interplay, rhythmic switch-ups and the kind of collective momentum that makes this music land in the room.
