Info
The Divine Comedy, the long-running project of Northern Irish songwriter Neil Hannon, brings its chamber-pop songbook to Portsmouth Guildhall on 7 July 2026. Since the late 80s, Hannon has woven classical-leaning arrangements, British pop sense and dry wit into carefully crafted stories. Liberation and Promenade sketched the blueprint with strings, piano and literary nods; Casanova and Fin de Siècle pushed the sound into punchier, more theatrical territory; Regeneration, Absent Friends and Victory for the Comic Muse shifted between leaner rock textures and lush orchestrations, while Bang Goes the Knighthood, Foreverland and Office Politics extended that mix with social observation and bittersweet melodies.
On stage, Hannon fronts a versatile band, revisiting favourites and deeper cuts across three decades. Expect elegant arrangements built around voice, piano and guitar, with room for woodwinds or strings depending on the tour, and songs that move from waltzing vignettes to hooky pop. A night for narrative pop, sharp turns of phrase and melodies that stay with you.
