Happy Mondays

On 27 January 2027 Happy Mondays are playing at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. The band from Salford, which grew to prominence in the Madchester scene, has been blending post‑punk, jangly indie guitars, funk, house and a psychedelic edge since the 1980s into its own danceable sound.

Centered on singer and lyricist Shaun Ryder, alongside Paul Ryder, Gaz Whelan, Paul Davis and Mark Day, the group progressed through Factory Records: from the early releases to Bummed and then to Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches, which featured Rowetta on vocals, while Bez added colour to the live shows as a performer. After a split and detours with Black Grape they returned with Uncle Dysfunktional; since then the formation has continued to tour in changing line‑ups.

On stage the Mondays draw on their entire career, from the rougher beginnings to the rave‑fed material of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Guitars and beats intertwine, with songs that bridge alternative rock and club culture — precisely the territory in which the band has always operated.
