On 19 November 2026 at the Transbordeur in Villeurbanne, GoGo Penguin presents Necessary Fictions. The Manchester trio — Chris Illingworth on piano, Nick Blacka on bass and Jon Scott on drums — continues its blend of jazz, classical influences and electronica by further expanding its sonic spectrum. This new repertoire introduces modular synths and a Moog Grandmother alongside an electric bass, while retaining the acoustic foundation that defines the group. The pieces revolve around repeated motifs, melodic bass lines and fragmented rhythms, with drumming that propels club-like textures without leaving the trio format. Straddling the organic and the electronic, the band sharpens a more direct compositional approach, worked through timbres and contrasts, as a return to the essentials of its language. Necessary Fictions marks a point at which GoGo Penguin pushes further into their constructions and dynamics, crafted for a precise and immersive live performance.
