Info
On May 30, 2026 at La Rotonde, Châteaurenard, The Abyssinians take the stage. Formed in Kingston in the late 1960s, the vocal trio led by Bernard Collins and brothers Donald and Lynford Manning accompanied the shift from rocksteady to roots reggae. Rooted in gospel and nourished by the soul of Sam Cooke and Curtis Mayfield, their close harmonies glide over meditative tempos and deep bass lines. Satta Massagana, first recorded at Studio One and later on their own Clinch label, established the group in the reggae landscape with a Rasta imagery threaded with biblical references and Amharic words. The albums Forward On To Zion and Arise cemented that sound, continued live over the years in varying lineups but always focused on ensemble singing and Rastafari hymns.
Big Youth completes the bill. A roots-style encounter, between spirituality and social commentary, driven by responsive vocals and a groove that knows how to take its time.
