Burning Spear, aka Winston Rodney, comes from Saint Ann’s Bay and has followed a deeply roots-oriented path imbued with Rastafarian spirituality since the late 1960s. First appearing as a trio at Studio One, he made his mark with Marcus Garvey and its dub version Garvey’s Ghost, followed by Social Living and Man in the Hills. A voice with an almost incantatory phrasing, slow tempos, repetitive bass lines, Nyabinghi percussion and spare brass carry lyrics nourished by Marcus Garvey, African history and Jamaican life. In concert, his songs unfold into long collective journeys.
Born in Handsworth, Birmingham, Steel Pulse formed in 1975 around David Hinds and sits within the British reggae movement in dialogue with the punk scene. From the early manifestos Handsworth Revolution and Tribute to the Martyrs to True Democracy, the band combines a roots grounding, finely crafted harmonies and a direct writing that confronts racism and inequality. Still active, from African Holocaust to Mass Manipulation, Steel Pulse shares the bill with Burning Spear on 7 July 2026 at FIDUCIAL Astéria, Décines-Charpieu.
