On 11 April 2026 at Vega in Copenhagen, South African singer and songwriter Bongeziwe Mabandla brings a stripped-back afro-folk shaped in Tsolo and Johannesburg. His songs stay close to the voice, carried by acoustic guitar, discreet electronics and choral textures, with lyrics mainly in isiXhosa and occasional English. The writing turns to inner life, the shifts of relationships and social memory, with melodies that leave space for silence and breath.
Across Umlilo, Mangaliso, iimini and amaXesha, he has built a palette that balances folk ballads, slow pulses and repeating motifs. On stage, this language unfolds with fingerpicked patterns, low-end throb, soft drones and call-and-response refrains. The set draws from the intimate arcs of iimini and the more contemplative tones of amaXesha, alongside earlier pieces that trace the line between acoustic folk and subtle electronic textures.
