On 18 November 2026 at La Clef in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Manchester’s GoGo Penguin present their hybrid jazz, nourished as much by classical music as by electronics. For fifteen years the trio has been shaping a sound that is at once enveloping and taut, built on the precise rapport between Chris Illingworth (piano), Nick Blacka (bass) and Jon Scott (drums). With their eighth album, Necessary Fictions (2025), they expand their playground: modular synths, a Moog Grandmother and electric bass appear without erasing their signposts — repetitive loops, builds of tension, tempo variations and calmer breaths. This highly cinematic writing has led them into music for film, from Memento Mori (Jean Heches, 2022) to Juste une illusion (Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, 2026).

That same evening, Daudi Matsiko provides a more intimate counterpoint. A British songwriter of Ugandan origin, he moves in chiaroscuro: a soft, almost restrained voice, precise fingerpicking and lyrics that observe experience without filter. His debut album, The King Of Misery (2024), explores depression and bipolar disorder and draws glimmers of hope from them. Contemporary folk and spare melodies, at times reminiscent of Nick Drake, Mark Hollis or Sufjan Stevens, his hushed songs play with silence as much as with nuance. A subtle dialogue between inward soulfulness and autobiographical folk.
