Toploader
Formed in Eastbourne on England’s south coast, Toploader came together in the late 1990s around singer/keyboardist Joseph Washbourn and guitarist Dan Hipgrave, in a post‑Britpop climate where melodic rock dominated British radio. The band developed a piano‑centred sound blending alternative rock, pop rock and touches of soul and funk, with strongly sung choruses and accessible song structures. Toploader’s debut studio album, Onka’s Big Moka (1999), established this mix of rock energy and warmer atmospheres, notably propelled by their cover of “Dancing in the Moonlight”, while Magic Hotel (2002) extended the approach with a broader production. After a split in the mid‑2000s, the members reunited on stage and returned to recording with Only Human (2011) and Seeing Stars (2017), reaffirming a songwriting style oriented toward British pop rock, between ballads and more upbeat tracks. A regular presence on festival stages and in mid‑sized UK venues, Toploader has sustained a long career through steady touring, revisiting their early repertoire while gradually incorporating more recent compositions.
