Mig

Born in Grenoble in 1999, MIG is rooted in trip hop that mixes electronic textures, acoustic instruments and influences from hip-hop as well as North African music. The project initially formed around Gaël Chatelain and Julien Blanchet before stabilizing as a trio with singer Djazia Satour, Mathieu Goust and Piero Martin. The central place of Djazia Satour’s voice, together with songs in French, English and Arabic, gives MIG an identity where downtempo rhythms, bass, percussion and melancholic atmospheres intersect. After a self-titled maxi released in 2001, MIG developed its repertoire on stage, notably opening for Sinsemilia, The Cranberries and Dionysos. The first album, Dhikrayat, appeared in 2004, followed by Yamatna in 2006, a record that further emphasizes the Arabic-tinged sonorities already present in the band’s universe. Throughout the 2000s, MIG performed across French venues and festivals, on the borderlines of electronic, trip hop and multicultural chanson scenes, with a sound built on the balance between urban tension, restrained arrangements and an interplay of multiple cultural inheritances.
