DYGL

Formed in Tokyo in 2012 in an academic setting, DYGL brings together four musicians around English‑sung rock that draws on indie rock, alternative rock, garage rock and emo inflections, with a marked taste for direct guitars, clear melodies and taut rhythms. The band first made a name for itself with EP #1 in 2015 and the EP Don’t Know Where It Is in 2016, before rapidly expanding its live activity across Japan. Some members of DYGL were also playing in Ykiki Beat at the time, another hub of Tokyo’s independent scene. In 2017 DYGL recorded in the United States and released Say Goodbye to Memory Den, produced by Albert Hammond Jr. and Gus Oberg, a debut album that sharpens their writing between nervous post‑punk and angular pop rock. The band continued touring in Asia, played Fuji Rock Festival, SXSW and Summer Sonic, and spent a period based in London, where Songs of Innocence & Experience took shape in 2019, produced by Rory Attwell. Subsequent releases show a shift toward a broader, more introspective sound with A Daze In A Haze (2021) and Thirst (2022), the latter recorded by the band themselves. From the start, DYGL has maintained a compact approach to the rock format, balancing melodic tension, live energy and British and American influences reworked from Japan.
