Masayoshi Takanaka

Born in Akabane, Tokyo, and raised in the Ōi district of Shinagawa, Masayoshi Takanaka established himself on the Japanese scene from the early 1970s as a rock—and later fusion—guitarist, noted for a very melodic, singing style. After teenage beginnings in 1971, he played with Strawberry Path and Fried Egg before joining the Sadistic Mika Band and then Sadistics, placing him both in rock and in studio work. He launched his solo career with Seychelles in 1976, followed by Takanaka (1977) and An Insatiable High (1977), where a flexible instrumental style began to emerge, marked by jazz‑rock, Brazilian rhythms, tropical pop and themes associated with summer and travel. This aesthetic sharpened with Brasilian Skies (1978), Jolly Jive (1979), which includes “Blue Lagoon”, then the conceptual project The Rainbow Goblins (1981) and Saudade (1982). In the mid‑1980s Takanaka moved his sound toward more pop‑oriented and danceable forms on Traumatic (1985), Jungle Jane (1986) and Hot Pepper (1988), before returning to a more pronounced instrumental fusion with Fade to Blue (1992). Active on stage for more than five decades, he has continued to release albums on his Lagoon Records label and to maintain a repertoire in which the guitar remains central.
