Shaun Ryder

Born in Little Hulton, Greater Manchester, Shaun Ryder first established himself in the early 1980s as the singer and lyricist of Happy Mondays, a band formed in Salford and quickly associated with the Madchester scene. His direct writing and spoken delivery contributed to a sound that mixed post-punk, baggy, alternative rock, funk grooves and dance culture, with a pronounced psychedelic edge. With Happy Mondays, Ryder navigated the late 1980s and early 1990s with albums such as Bummed (1988) and Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches (1990), a period when the band moved between clubs, rock festivals and the rave environment. In 1993 Ryder launched Black Grape with Bez, a former dancer and member of Happy Mondays, in a more abrasive vein combining rock, dance beats and spoken word. Black Grape released It’s Great When You’re Straight... Yeah in 1995 and Stupid Stupid Stupid in 1997, before returning later with Pop Voodoo in 2017 and Orange Head in 2024. At the same time, Ryder pursued a more sporadic solo career with Amateur Night in the Big Top (2003) and Visits from Future Technology (2021), and he also appears on Gorillaz’s DARE (2005).
